What Are the Requirements to Become EMDR Certified?

To become an EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist, you must meet the following requirements:

Certification

EMDRIA Certification is an advanced credential that recognizes EMDR therapists who have demonstrated additional experience, consultation, and continuing education beyond Basic Training. The certification process is designed to deepen your clinical skills, strengthen your confidence in applying EMDR therapy, and support excellence in the treatment of trauma and other mental health concerns. Throughout your certification journey, you'll receive individualized consultation, refine your case conceptualization and EMDR practice, and complete the requirements established by EMDRIA to become an EMDRIA Certified Therapist™.

20 Hours of Consultation by an EMDR Consultant

Provide documentation from the EMDR Consultant(s) who provided EMDR consultation to you. You must specify the exact number of consultation hours you received and designate how many of those hours were individual consultations and how many were group consultations.

Important consultation requirements:

  • Be sure to review the Consultation Packet and become familiar with the consultation process

  • The 20 hours of consultation must have been completed within the last 5 years

  • If you continue to receive consultation hours for over a 5 year period, then as long as the EMDR Consultant is able to explain in the letter of documentation when the consultation started and ended (e.g. 2013-2022), and if/when long breaks in consultation occurre,d that will be acceptable

  • If you have received consultation from more than one EMDR Consultant, you will need documentation from each one

  • At least 10 of the hours must be obtained through individual, EMDR-focused consultation. The remaining 10 hours may be obtained through small group consultation

  • Consultation groups cannot exceed more than eight participants at a time

  • EMDR Consultants-in-Training can provide up to 15 hours of consultation. The remaining five hours must be provided by an EMDR Consultant

  • Only consultation hours received after completion of an EMDRIA-approved EMDR Training program can be applied towards this requirement

Notarized Statement of Practice & EMDR Experience

Submit a notarized statement documenting:

  • At least two years of experience in your field of license

  • At least 50 EMDR sessions with at least 25 clients

Both statements may be included in a single notarized document. Applicants can simply state, "I have at least 2 years of experience in my field of license and I have conducted at least 50 EMDR therapy sessions with at least 25 clients," or similar wording, and then have it notarized.

Letters of Recommendation Regarding Professional Practice

Provide two letters of recommendation regarding your professional utilization of EMDR, ethics in practice, and professional character.

  • These letters may be from colleagues or peers

  • Letters from your EMDR Consultant or EMDR Consultant-in-Training do not count as peer letters

  • Two letters of recommendation from colleagues or peers are required

EMDRIA Approved EMDR Training

Provide a copy of your final certificate from an EMDRIA-approved EMDR training program.

12 Hours of EMDRIA Credits

Provide certificates of completion for at least 12 hours of EMDRIA Credits (continuing education in EMDR).

  • Only EMDRIA Credit Programs in EMDR obtained after the completion of EMDR Training may be used towards this requirement. Initial EMDR Trainings are not awarded EMDRIA Credits

  • Certificates of completion of EMDRIA credit hours should include the EMDRIA program approval number and the number of credits earned

License/Certification

Provide a copy of your current license to practice independently as a mental health professional in the state or province where you practice. The license must include the current expiration date.

EMDR Consultant Letter(s) of Recommendation for EMDR Certification

Provide letter(s) from one or more EMDR Consultant(s) addressing your utilization of EMDR with clients and recommending you to be certified in EMDR.

  • Letters may include documentation of consultation hours as required in #4 above. If that's the case, upload the same document for both requirements on the application

  • Letters from EMDR Consultants-in-Training do not meet this requirement. Letters must be from an EMDR Consultant

What Are the Requirements to Become an EMDR Consultant in Training (CIT)?

To become an EMDRIA CIT, you must meet the following requirements:

The EMDRIA Approved Consultant in Training (CIT) pathway is designed for EMDRIA Certified Therapists who want to develop the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to become an EMDRIA Approved Consultant. Throughout the process, you'll receive consultation of consultation, gain experience providing consultation to other clinicians, and complete the educational requirements established by EMDRIA.

Secure a Consultant

Briana is an EMDRIA approved Consultant and if you choose to work with her, you can declare her on the CIT Declaration Form. You will enter a contract with her prior to filling out the CIT Declaration Form.

What Are the Requirements to Become an Approved Consultant?

To become an EMDRIA Approve Consultant, you must meet the following requirements:

Approved Consultant

Becoming an EMDRIA Approved Consultant™ is the next step in professional growth for EMDRIA Certified Therapists who want to mentor and support other EMDR clinicians. The Consultant in Training (CIT) process is designed to help you develop the knowledge, consultation skills, and professional competencies needed to provide high-quality EMDR consultation. Throughout your journey, you'll receive consultation of consultation, gain experience consulting with EMDR therapists, and complete the education and consultation requirements established by EMDRIA to become an EMDRIA Approved Consultant™.

Current Mental Health License

  • You will need to confirm that you hold a current license to practice independently as a mental health professional in the state, province, or country where you practice. 

EMDR Experience

  • Do you have at least one-year post your CIT declaration date? 

    • You will need to confirm that you have at least one year of experience as an EMDRIA Consultant in Training™. This will be based on the day you completed the CIT declaration form.

    • Have you conducted at least 300 EMDR sessions with at least 75 clients?

      • You will need to confirm that you have conducted at least 300 EMDR sessions with at least 75 clients.

Twenty (20) Consultation of Consultation Hours

  • You will need to complete a minimum of twenty (20) consultation of consultation hours with at least one EMDRIA Approved Consultant™.

    • At least ten (10) of the twenty (20) hours must be completed as individual hours. The remaining hours can be obtained as individual, group, or a combination of the two.

    • Hours must be completed with an EMDRIA Approved Consultant™. 

    • Hours should be completed within a five-year period, but no faster than one year from starting the CIT process (based on the day you completed the CIT declaration form).

    • You can work with multiple consultants; however, EMDRIA™ will only accept consultation of consultation hours from up to three (3) EMDRIA Approved Consultants™.

    • Group consultation cannot exceed more than four (4) CITs at any one time. The ratio is 1:4.

Consultation Experience

  • Have you provided consultation hours to a minimum of five (5) consultees? 

    • You will need to confirm that you have provided consultation hours to a minimum of 5 (five) consultees.

      • At least three (3) of the five (5) consultees must have completed an EMDRIA Approved Basic Training. 

    • Have you provided a minimum of 15 consultation hours to consultees on their use of EMDR? 

      • You will need to confirm that you have provided a minimum of 15 consultation hours to consultees on their use of EMDR.

      • The consultation number is for the total number overall, not the number of consultation hours provided per consultee. 

Evaluation from Consultant

  • You will need to receive a completed CIT Verification, Evaluation, and Recommendation (VER) online form from each EMDRIA Approved Consultant™ that you worked with to obtain the consultation of consultation hours.
